On March 3, 1862, Stephen Patterson wrote a letter to his father from Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. In the letter he reports that he has had the measles for the past 10 days and has not been able to leave his room. He also writes about the students celebrating the capture of Fort Donnelson and Nashville by going around “with 4 or 5 drums and tin pans” and serenading every person in town.
