61st OVI Arrives at Sperryville, VA

On June 23, 1862, the 61st OVI joined the Army of Major General John C. Fremont at Strasburg, Virginia and marched with that army across the Blue Ridge Mountains to Sperryville, Virginia.  On June 26, 1862, Fremont’s Mountain Department Army became part of Major General John Popes’s Corps in the Army of Virginia.  Believing he was senior to Pope, General Fremont became angry and resigned from the Union Army.  He would never hold a commission in the Union Army again.
