Types of Student Assistant Positions

Circulation

Assist patrons with checking out/receiving materials, sort and shelve materials, place requests for local and OhioLINK materials in online circulation system, sort notices for delivery, search stacks for missing or overdue materials, and other duties. Also assist with Interlibrary Loan and Course Reserves processing by verifying copyright, photocopying, filing, etc. Requirements include the ability to move and shelve materials for two hours at a time, move a book cart holding approximately 60 pounds of materials, perform detailed work with moderate supervision, and learn basic functions of the online library system. Must be college work-study for the current academic year.

Collection Development

Help process gift books, check bibliographies on online catalog and databases, and distribute budget reports, office forms, and catalogs. Requirements include keyboarding skills, strong attention to detail, some physical labor, the ability to work with moderate supervision, and some experience with computers and database software. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Depository Preparation

Process materials for shipment to regional depository and provide stack maintenance. This involves searching the online catalog to match records, attaching barcodes to items, and creating new item records for catalog. Also shift materials in the collection to meet space needs. Requirements include the ability to: move book carts holding up to 75 pounds of materials, learn and use the online library system, understand multiple classification systems (Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine), and work with moderate supervision. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Digital Services

Scan materials according to specification set by Digital Services staff. Uses optical character recognition software to transfer images into documents that can be manipulated. Type metadata created by Digital Services staff into database. Make photocopies. Maintain files, documents and reference manuals. Pick up and drop off scanned materials on campus. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Library Computing Services

Must have computer experience. Supports the Library Computing Services staff through: repair, replacement, and inventory of all libraries' equipment; preparation and distribution of reports and statistics; providing support to library staff and users; and office duties including typing, filing, photocopying, and answering telephones. Requirements include the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, to lift 40 pounds, have a knowledge of PC hardware and software, and a desire to learn. Knowledge of HTML preferred. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Media

Assist patrons, process materials, and maintain collections in the Current Periodicals and Media room. Duties include helping patrons find materials, use the microform readers, and research the libraries' website. Also reshelve and file materials, help gather statistics, and assist with other projects as needed. Requirements are good attendance, the ability to pass a Library of Congress call number test (information given during interview), and college work-study for the current academic year.

Reference & Instruction

Aid in a variety of duties related to customer service, reference collection, and reference staff support. General duties include shelving books, maintaining order of the collection, working on special projects, assisting library customers, and other duties as assigned. Requirements include: some knowledge of personal computers, laser printers, and popular computer applications; dependability, flexibility in tasks, the ability to interact with library customers and staff, patience, and the ability to work with and assist customers with disabilities; strong verbal and written communication skills; and acceptance for some weekend hours. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Special Collections and Archives

Aid in a variety of duties related to customer service, collections maintenance, and basic preservation of archival materials and rare books. Duties include organizing papers, cleaning documents, helping patrons find materials, answering telephone/mail inquiries and media orders, and handling basic office functions such as typing, filing, data input, and photocopying. May assist with microfilming documents and records, and scanning images. Requirements include the ability to interact with the public and staff in a polite and efficient manner, to work independently, and the willingness to request assistance to ensure accurate completion of tasks. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

STAC

Provides hands-on training to students using PC and Macintosh computers, and a variety of software packages, including but not limited to multimedia production, graphic imaging, video production, desktop publishing, presentations, and web authoring. Must be college work-study for current academic year.

Technical Services

Process new materials by adding barcodes, stamps, security strips, and call numbers; sort and receive government materials; perform database work; and fulfill other office functions such as filing, keying invoices, etc. Duties include using multiple computer systems. Requirements involve the ability to maneuver 50-pound boxes, concentrate on detail, and work with moderate supervision. Must be college work-study for current academic year.
