Importing References

In order to import references into RefWorks at Wright State University, you must first export them from a database. Instructions for exporting references vary by search interface. Check the lists below to find the database you are using.

EBSCOhost

In list of search results, add items to folder by clicking on the folder icon in each reference.

Click on Folder link (along top and has an icon that looks like a folder with paper in it). Select the references to export.

Click Export icon (text page with green arrow).

Choose Direct Export to RefWorks. Make sure popup blocker is turned OFF.

Click Save button (left side of screen).

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

Electronic Journal Center (OhioLINK)

In list of search results, click on a reference title to export.

From the box on the right side of the page, in Format/export box, choose RefWorks and click Go button.

RefWorks opens in the same window. Log into your account.

Reference is imported automatically.

Engineering Village

In a list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click on Selected records (along top of page).

Click on Download (in ribbon above search results).

Choose RefWorks direct import. Click on the Download button.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are automatically imported.

FirstSearch (OCLC)

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click Export button.

Choose to Export: Records 1-10 (first page of results) or Marked records from this search: x (x is how many you checkmarked on the page) and choose Export to: RefWorks.

Turn off popup blocker and click Export button.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

Google Scholar

On Google Scholar homepage, click on Settings (top right area).

See the last option, Bibliographic Manager, and then click show links to import citations into and choose RefWorks.

Click on the Save button.

Run a search so that you have a list of results.

See option to Import into RefWorks link in each citation.

When you click on Import into RefWorks,

RefWorks will open in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

IEEE Xplore

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click Download Citations button.

In Download Citations box, for Include, choose Citation Only or Citation & Abstract, and for Format, choose RefWorks.

Click Download Citation.

RefWorks will open a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

JSTOR

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click on Export Citation link.

On the Export Citations page, click RefWorks link.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

Lexis/Nexis

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export. Click on the small book icon (Export Bibliographic References) in the upper right corner of the page.

Leave all choices at default, or change them if you want to, then click the

Export button. RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

MathSci Net

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

From the Batch Download dropdown menu, choose Citations (BibTeX) and then click on the Retrieve Marked link.

Select and copy all of the text.

Open RefWorks in another window and log onto your account.

In References menu, choose Import.

For Import Filter/Data Source, choose BibTeX; for Database, choose MathSciNet(AMS) (BibTeX format).

In the From Text box, paste what you copied in step 3.

Click Import button.

OhioLINK Library Catalog

In list of search results, click on the Save Item button under each record you want to export.

Click on View Saved Records button (along top of page).

Under Format of List, choose Full Display.

Under Send List To, choose Local Disk and click Submit. Save the .txt file.

Open RefWorks and log onto your account.

In the References menu, click on Import.

For Import Filter/Data Source, choose Wright State; for Database, choose OhioLINK Library Catalog (Full Display). Browse for the .txt file you saved in step 5. Click Import.

NOTE: It is also possible to search the OhioLINK catalog through the RefWorks interface. In RefWorks, under the Search menu, click Online Catalog or Database.

Under Wright State Specific, choose OhioLINK.

OSearch

In list of search results, checkmark Store under each reference to export.

Click Stored Records button at the top of page.

Click Export Records link.

Under Export Formats, choose Direct export to RefWorks.

Under Other Options, choose Automatically import into bibliographic manager system.

Click on Export Now button.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

OVID SP (Wolters Kluwer)

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click on Export link (along top of results).

A new window titled Export Citation List will open. In this window: for Export To, choose RefWorks. In Selected Fields to Display, choose Complete Reference. Leave the Include options at the default settings.

Click the Export button.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

ProQuest

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

Click Export/Save link (along top of results).

Click Export/Save to RefWorks link. In the new window that opens, click Continue.

RefWorks opens in a new window.

Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

PubMed (NLM)

Option 1: Using PubMed’s Citation Manager

In a list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

In Send to dropdown menu (along top right), for destination, choose Citation Manager, then Create File.

Save the file. The file will be saved as “Citations.nbib.”

Open RefWorks and log into your account.

In the References menu, click on Import.

For Import Filter/Data Source choose NLM PubMed; for Database choose PubMed.

Browse for the citations.nbib file that you saved in step 3.

Click on the Import button.

Option 2: Saving and Importing Text File

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

In Send to dropdown menu, choose File.

Also in the Send to menu (along top right), for Format choose MEDLINE.

Click on the Create File button

Save the file.

Open RefWorks and log onto your account.

In the References menu, click on Import.

In the From Text File area: for Import Filter/Data Source, choose NLM PubMed; for Database choose PubMed. Leave Encoding at the default.

Browse for the .txt file you saved in step 5.

Click on Import button.

Option 3: Importing Using Copy and Paste

In list of search results, checkmark the references to export.

In Display Settings dropdown menu (along top left), choose MEDLINE.

Click Apply.

Select all of the text and copy it.

Open RefWorks and log into your account. In the References menu, choose Import.

In the From Text area: for Import Filter/Data Source labeled NLM PubMed and for Databases choose PubMed.

In the From Text box, paste what you copied in step 4.

Click on Import button.

NOTE: It is also possible to search PubMed through the RefWorks interface. Using this method, citations can be directly imported to your references list. In RefWorks, under the Search menu, click Online Catalog or Database. Select PubMed from the list.

SciFinder Scholar

In a list of search results, checkmark the records to export.

Choose Export (upper right area).

In the popup box: for Export, choose Selected; for Citation manager, choose Citation export format (*.ris). Leave the other options blank.

Click on the Export button.

Choose to Save the file.

Open RefWorks and log onto your account.

In the References menu, choose Import.

For Import Filter/Data Source, choose RIS Format; for Database choose RIS Format.

In the From Text box, browse to the file you saved in step 5. Leave Encoding at the default.

Click on Import .

Scopus

In search results list, select the records you want to export by clicking the checkboxes.

Click on Export (in grey area above search results).

In the Output: Export, Print, Email or Create a Bibliography window that opens: for 1, choose the Export option; for 2, for Export format choose RefWorks direct export and for Output choose Complete format.

Click on the Export button.

RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account.

References are imported automatically.

SPIE Digital Library

In search results list, checkmark the references you want to export. Click on the Download Citation link (at top of results). In the Download Selected Articles box that opens, choose RefWorks in the left dropdown menu and click the Download button. Ignore the right dropdown menu. In the new window that opens, select all of the text and copy it. Open RefWorks and log into your account. In the References menu, choose Import. For Import Filter/Data Source, choose RefWorks Tagged Format; for Database, choose Tagged Format. In the From Text box, paste what you copied in step 4. Click on Import.

Web of Knowledge (ISI)

In search results list, checkmark the references to export. Scroll to bottom of results (“Output Records”). Choose “Full Record” then click the RefWorks icon. RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account. References are imported automatically.

WSU Catalog

To import one reference at a time:

In search results list, click on the title of a reference title you'd like to export. Click on the RefWorks button near the bottom of the page. RefWorks opens in a new window. Log into your account. References are imported automatically.

To import multiple references:

In search results list, checkmark the references to export.

Click Save Marked button just above the titles list.

Click on View Saved button near the top of the page.

Click Export Saved button near the top of the page.

Under Format of List, choose EndNote/RefWorks; under Send List To, choose Screen and click Submit button.

Select and copy all of the text.

Open RefWorks and log onto your account.

Click on the References button at top left of page, and in the submenu that opens, choose Import.

For Import Filter/Data Source, choose Innovative Interfaces (Endnote/RefWorks) and for Database, choose Wright State University.

In the From Text  box, paste what you copied in step 6.

Click Import.
