Tributes to Project Gutenberg Founder Michael Hart

September 8th, 2011 · by spolanka · 1 Comment

In 1971 Michael Hart created the first eBook, The Declaration of Independence.  Little did he or anyone else know where this would lead.  Michael hart passed away yesterday.  There are several tributes and obituaries on the web already. I’ve linked to a few of them below.  Those considering a donation can use the usual Project Gutenberg link.

Michael Hart, a true visionary. He put the public in public domain. Whenever you download a public domain ebook these days, the original file has most often come from Project Gutenberg. The first ebooks I ever read on a computer screen came from PG. And now many of them are available via the Overdrive vendor. Mr. Hart gave the world of reading a wonderful gift. May his legacy live on.
