To honor open access week, I’ll be highlighting a different open access eBook platform each day. The purpose is to create awareness of various open access ebook collections. If you have collections to suggest, please let me know.
I first learned about SciELO Books (Scientific Electronic Library Online) when I traveled to Brazil last month for the SNBU Conference. This open ebook collection was just launched in March of 2012. It is based on the successful SciELO open access journal collection. The website is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
From the website: “The SciELO Books Portal publishes national and thematic collections of academic books online with the objective of maximizing the visibility, accessibility, use and impact of the research results, essays and studies that are published in them. The books published by SciELO Books are selected by a scientific committee following a peer review process. The digital versions of the books are formatted according to international standards that allow for access and citation controls, and that permit the books to be read on the widest possible variety of ebook readers, tablets, smartphones and internet browsers. Apart from the SciELO Books Portal itself, the books can be found via search engines. They will also become available through other international distribution channels.”
There are approximately 300 books available from a variety of university presses in Brazil. A news article in Publish News Brazil written last June said the following about the collection, “SciELO Books is a pilot project for the presses of Unesp (in São Paulo), UFBA (in Bahia) and Fiocruz (in Rio de Janeiro). There are currently 250 titles online, with the aim to reach 500 by the end of the year. And SciELO is looking to expand its partners.”
