Rourke Educational Media’s New Fall ’14 Book Series Explores America’s ‘Symbols of Freedom’
VERO BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 4, 2014) –While America’s most important landmarks and symbols are readily recognizable to many, a new series of books for fall goes in depth to help young students learn about the history and inspiration behind these iconic images. Rourke Educational Media announced today it is introducing “Symbols of Freedom,” a 10-title series geared for students in grades 3-6.
“While some of our country’s most significant symbols – Statue of Liberty, White House, the American flag – may need no introduction to young people, the books in this series are very effective at revealing behind-the-scenes stories and unique perspectives that educate and entertain,” said Luana Mitten, director of instructional services, Rourke Educational Media.
In “The American Flag” book, author Jeanne Sturm, an elementary school teacher in Florida, explores how some historians believe Francis Hopkinson – not Betsy Ross – may have actually created the first American flag. “That’s just one example of how these books make young learners think and thirst for more, and provide teachers with a forum to stimulate classroom discussion,” Mitten said.
All books in the series feature an array of historical photographs and educational factoids (“Freedom Facts”), as well as a timeline of key events, a glossary to help build vocabulary skills, and a series of questions to gauge reader comprehension and content mastery.
Here’s a look at all titles in the “Symbols of Freedom” series:
- “Liberty Bell”
- “Mount Rushmore”
- “National Mall”
- “Pictures of America”
- “St. Louis Gateway Arch”
- “Statue of Liberty”
- “The Alamo”
- “The American Flag”
- “The Star Spangled Banner”
- “The White House”
All books are currently available in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats.
