The Digital Public Library of America is thrilled to announce that an anonymous donor has committed to provide substantial support towards DPLA’s mission in the form of a $250,000 grant to strengthen DPLA’s technical capabilities. This grant will allow DPLA to expand its technology team to handle additional content ingestion and to implement important new features based around its platform and website.
Today’s grant represents the third investment in DPLA’s mission by this anonymous donor. In 2013 they contributed to the rapid scaling-up of DPLA’s Hub network, and in 2015 they provided support for DPLAfest 2015 in Indianapolis. The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is on the way to connecting online collections from coast to coast by 2017 – an effort boosted by a new $3.4 million investment from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and John S. and James L. Knight Foundations. These two new awards, coupled with significant earlier support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Endowment for the Humanities, will allow DPLA to open new Service Hubs that provide a way for all cultural heritage organizations across the country to connect through one national collection. The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) is pleased to announce that it has received $96,000 from the Whiting Foundation to begin creating resources for users in K-12 and higher education. The grant will allow DPLA to develop and share primary source sets built on the foundation of national educational standards and under the guidance of a diverse group of education experts. DPLA will also refine tools for creating user-generated content so that students and teachers can curate their own resources as part of the learning process. DPLAfest 2015 — April 17-18, 2015
DPLAfest 2015—our second celebration of all-things DPLA—will take place on April 17-18, 2015 in Indianapolis.
The two-day public event, set to coincide with DPLA’s second birthday, will bring hundreds of people from our large and growing community of librarians, archivists, and museum professionals, developers and technologists, publishers and authors, teachers and students, and members of the public to Indianapolis, Indiana for interactive workshops, hackathons, engaging discussions with community leaders and practitioners, fun events, and so much more. DPLAfest will appeal to librarians, archivists, museum professionals, developers and technologists, publishers and authors, teachers and students, and members of the public alike who are interested in an engaging mix of discussion-oriented workshops and hands-on activities.
Area institutions serving as co-hosts include the Indianapolis Public Library (Central), the Indiana State Library, the IUPUI University Library, and the Indiana Historical Society.

The Digital Public Library of America launched on April 18, 2013, less than two years ago. And what a couple of years it has been. From a staff of three people, a starting slate of two million items, and 500 contributing institutions, we are now an organization of 12, with over eight million items from 1,300 contributing institutions. We have materials from all 50 states—and from around the world—in a remarkable 400 languages. Within our collection are millions of books and photographs, maps of all shapes and sizes, material culture and works of art, the products of science and medicine, and rare documents, postcards, and media.
