EBSCO introduces Flipster, a new way to access digital magazines

(Updated 11/3/2014 with new information in italics below) Note on this new product:  Flipster is a subscription-based product for libraries. Usage models are dependent per title and per publisher. Publishers can set the following limits per title: 50, 100, 500 or Unlimited simultaneous users. The majority of Flipster titles are offered at the unlimited level.

New study shows increase in reading on mobile phones

Publishing Technology released a report earlier this month about trends in mobile phone ebook reading.  An infographic, slides of a presentation, and full report are all available using the link above.

The survey, consisting of 3,000 consumers from the US and UK, concluded that:

  • 43% have read an e-book, or part of an e-book, on their handsets
  • 66% of mobile phone book readers currently read more on their phones than they did last year

Publishing Technology explored the subject of mobile phone book reading by surveying consumers in the US and UK to better understand their habits and preferences.  They unveiled the results and key trends from the study over the course of the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair.  The Publishing Technology blog, Content Forward, also includes study results for mobile devices and a variety of other topics.

ebrary to retire mobile app in August

ebrary will be launching a new and improved ebrary reader in the next few months.  Many of the new features are listed below (and also available in a ppt).  As a result of the new reader, ebrary will be retiring the dedicated mobile app on August 4th.  The new ereader is designed with laptop and tablet use in mind, tablets using the Bluefire app as access point (which has already been available for some time).

New features of Reader:
