Self-Publishing soars in 2012 – 60% more works than in 2011 according to Bowker

Self-Publishing Movement Continues Strong Growth in U.S. says Bowker- 2012 ISBNs show nearly 60% more self-published works than in 2011

New Providence, NJ – October 9, 2013 – A new analysis of U.S. ISBN data by ProQuest affiliate Bowker reveals that the number of self-published titles in 2012 jumped to more than 391,000, up 59 percent over 2011 and 422 percent over 2007. Ebooks continue to gain on print, comprising 40 percent of the ISBNs that were self-published in 2012, up from just 11 percent in 2007.

“The most successful self-publishers don’t view themselves as writers only, but as business owners,” said Beat Barblan, Bowker Director of Identifier Services. “They invest in their businesses, hiring experts to fill skill gaps and that’s building a thriving new service infrastructure in publishing.”

The analysis shows the growing prominence of a handful of companies that offer publishing services to individual authors.  More than 80 percent of self-published titles came to market with support from just eight companies, including Smashwords and CreateSpace. Continue reading

Self Publishing fuels steady title growth in 2011

June 5, 2012 (New Providence, NJ) — Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report on U. S. print book publishing for 2011, compiled from its Books In Print® database. Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that traditional print book output grew six percent in 2011, from 328,259 titles in 2010 to a projected 347,178 in 2011, driven almost exclusively by a strong self-publishing market. This is the most significant expansion in more than four years for America’s traditional publishing sector, but removing self-publishing from the equation would show that the market is relatively flat from 2010.

“Transformation of our industry has brought on a time of rich innovation in the publishing models we now have today. What was once relegated to the outskirts of our industry—and even took on demeaning names like ‘vanity press’ is now not only a viable alternative but what is driving the title growth of our industry today,” said Kelly Gallagher, Vice-President, Bowker Market Research. “From that standpoint, self-publishing is a true legitimate power to be reckoned with. Bowker releases results of global ebook research

Bowker launches survey of eBook growth and consumer attitudes on four continents

From a press release:  Bowker, the leading provider of market research information and business intelligence on book markets in the U.S., through BML Bowker, in the U.K., will launch a major study that will assess and track device adoption, attitudes, and purchasing habits of e-book consumers in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North and South America.  The study, commencing in January 2012 and repeating annually, will enable comparisons between e-book markets in countries experiencing different growth patterns and arm the publishing industry with a comprehensive range of qualitative and quantitative data. Bowker study shows print is NOT dead

Received this via email today:  Bowker released its annual report on U.S. print book publishing, compiled from its Books In Print® database.  Based on preliminary figures from U.S. publishers, Bowker is projecting that despite the popularity of e-books, traditional U.S. print title output in 2010 increased 5%.  Output of new titles and editions increased from 302,410 in 2009 to a projected 316,480 in 2010. The 5% increase comes on the heels of a 4% increase the previous year based on the final 2008-2009 figures.

The non-traditional sector continues its explosive growth, increasing 169% from 1,033,065 in 2009 to an amazing 2,776,260 in 2010.   These books, marketed almost exclusively on the web, are largely on-demand titles produced by reprint houses specializing in public domain works and by presses catering to self-publishers and ”micro-niche” publications. Bowker’s new Books-In-Print Improves Discovery of eBooks

Bowker has released a new version of Books In Print.   The new Books In Print is visually appealing and easy to navigate; robust for professional use by librarians, booksellers, and publishers, yet easy enough for novice users.  Even better, ebooks are easier to discover.  Mark Tullos, MLIS and Senior Product Manager at Bowker, offered some step-by-step instructions on discovering ebooks in print.  “From the new Books in Print advanced search, the user can enter the keyword in subject for example  “politics”, filter by forthcoming, book, and ebook, and receive a list of forthcoming ebooks within that subject. Next, you can open an item record and navigate to the ebook tab to review the various distributors/publishers, formats and prices.  Through Bowker’s title linking feature, major review sources for all formats are linked to the item record.  Later in 2011, Bowker will provide links in the ebook tab that with take the user to major distributor platforms to either browse further or acquire.” Continue reading

ProQuest to Digitize 30,000 rare early books from National Library of the Netherlands

January 11, 2011 (ANN ARBOR, Mich.) – ProQuest will digitize more than 30,000 rare early books from the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National Library of the Netherlands, capturing every volume in high-resolution color scans. This is the third major European national library to participate in ProQuest’s Early European Books project after the Danish Royal Library, Copenhagen and the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze in Italy. As with the agreements in Denmark and Italy, the material will be free to access in the host country. Continue reading

Bowker Report on Book Production – Non-traditional books surge

Bowker released a report today on U.S. Book production.  Among their projections:  U.S. book production in 2009 remained flat but 2009 was an extraordinary year of growth for “non-traditional” books.  According to the press release,  these [non-traditional] books, marketed almost exclusively on the web, are largely on-demand titles produced by reprint houses specializing in public domain works and by presses catering to self-publishers and ”micro-niche” publications.  Bowker projects that 764,448 titles were produced that fall outside Bowker’s traditional publishing and classification definitions.  This number is a 181% increase over 2008 — which doubled 2007’s output – driving total book production over 1,000,000 units for the first time. ”
