Gale hosted a webinar on the new products and services they have launched a couple weeks back, but I didn’t get to attend.  Below is a press release summarizing some of those initiatives.  Lots of new ebook collections were announced, including many with STEM monograph content for GVRL.

Digital Textbooks and Open Educational Resources – Summary of SOCHE Think TV session

On Tuesday, May 3rd I recorded a 15 minute segment for the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education on Think TV, the local public television station in Dayton, Ohio.  My topic was the rise of digital textbooks and options available for students and faculty to access and produce textbooks and learning materials.  Below is a snapshot of my general comments with links to various sources for more information.

Our current textbook system is broken.  We have arrived at $200 textbooks and have students who cannot afford them.  As a result, students try to borrow a textbook from the library or a friend (sometimes the older edition), purchase a used one, or go without.  Neither of these options provides revenue to the publisher, thus resulting in higher price points in an effort to recover the costs or production.   What can we do about this catch 22? University of Michigan Library opens ECCO – Eighteenth Century Collections Online to the public

The University of Michigan Library is opening to the public 2,229 searchable keyed-text editions of books from Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO).  The texts are available to the public at no cost.

ECCO is a research database containing significant English- and foreign-language titles printed in the United Kingdom during the 18th century and important works from the America The database is published by Gale, part of Cengage Learning.

The texts typed by the Text Creation Partnership, range from Pope’s “Essay on Man” to a “Discourse addressed to an Infidel Mathematician.”  The Text Creation Partnership (TCP) produced the keyed texts in collaboration with Gale, which provided page images for keying and is permitting the release of the keyed texts in support of the Library’s commitment to the creation of open access cultural heritage archives. Gale offering free access to six resources for National Library Week

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, is celebrating National Library Week by offering free access to six highly-praised online resources for use by any library during National Library Week.  Free access runs through National Library Week, from April 10 to April 24, 2010. Librarians can download the widget to their homepage by visiting www.gale.cengage.com/NLW starting on April 10. Library patrons should look for the widget on their library’s homepage, which provides single-click access to these online resources.

In salute of the American Library Association’s theme – Create your own story @ your library, Gale is offering free access to resources that help library users explore and inspire stories of all kinds. Cengage’s MindTap, an interview with Nader Qaimari

Last Friday I spoke with Nader Qaimari, the Senior VP of Marketing for Cengage Learning, about MindTap (TM).  MindTap is a program of digital products and service, including Cengage content, that engages students via interactivity.  MindTap plans to bring digital textbooks to life.  In the interview, Nader discusses how library resources fit into MindTap.  More information on MindTap, including sample videos is available at cengage.com/mindtap.

Gale’s Literary Collections added to the Portico Archive, over 1 million files

Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and Portico, part of the not-for-profit organization ITHAKA, today announced Gale will be preserving three additional digital historical collections with Portico. This follows the completed ingest of 10 Gale Digital Collections—including 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, The Making of Modern Law: Primary Resources and Eighteenth Century Collections Online—and represents over 80 million files (75 million pages of content), which doubled the size of the Portico archive in just one year. Cengage Learning recently unveiled MindTap™, a program of digital products and services, including Cengage content, that engages students through interactivity and offers instructors choice in content, platforms, devices and learning tools.  Beyond an eBook, course delivery platform or Learning Management System, MindTap is the first in a new category of Personal Learning Experiences (PLEs). MindTap is device agnostic, giving students access to their course materials anytime, anywhere – on their desktops, laptops, tablets or mobile phones.

At the core of MindTap is MindTap Reader™, which is a new interactive platform that brings digital textbooks to life.  The MindTap Reader adds significant reading learning activity functionality embedded within the context of text and other elements including video/audio, annotations, activities, applications and instructor source materials, while also preparing existing products to take advantage of future MindTap services. 87% students feel online libraries and databases have had significant impact on learning

According to a survey released last week by Cengage Learning, 87% of students feel that online libraries and databases have had the most significant impact on their overall learning. The survey, entitled “Instructors and Students: Technology Use, Engagement and Learning Outcomes” conducted by Eduventures, identifies a new generation of students and highlights pressures and obstacles hindering student success. The survey was administered to 751 students and 201 instructors across the United States in December 2010. This is the second Cengage Learning/Eduventures survey designed to uncover how educational technology impacts overall student engagement and learning outcomes.  Some additional library, database and ebook/ereader results are below.

What type of impact have the following technologies had on your overall learning?

  • 87% of students believe online libraries and databases have had the most significant impact on their overall learning.
  • 62% identify blogs, wikis, and other online authoring tools while 59% identify YouTube and recorded lectures.
  • E-books and e-textbooks impact overall learning among 50% of students surveyed, while 42% of students identify online portals. Continue reading
