Medical eBook Publishing Trends Webinar Summary

Today I attended the MLA webinar on e-books, 2011 Medical eBook Publishing Trends, sponsored by Ovid. My notes are below.

The current environment – Mark set the stage with some statistics on the popularity of eBooks. He discussed the digitization Waves in libraires, citing ebooks as the 4th wave.  abs/ins, ref tools, ejournals were the first 3 waves.

Why are ebooks more difficult?  Mark believes it’s in the final deliverable product.  The final product is much more complex to produce than a journal article.  It has more editing, illustrations, authors are paid, and individual sales to students are important to publishers for revenue.  All of these factors lead to a higher cost for the ebook than a journal article. ebrary adds new pharmaceutical eBook collection and breast cancer information center

ebrary® announced this week the availability of two new resources.  First, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ebrary® has collaborated with librarians from other organizations to create an open access database of breast cancer publications.  The site is available today at http://site.ebrary.com/lib/breastcancer.   ebrary’s Breast Cancer Searchable Information Center features a range of authoritative fact sheets, posters, and other materials from government agencies such as the National Cancer Institute, National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S.), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, United States Food and Drug Administration, Office of Women’s Health, and other authoritative sources.

Second, is a new program for pharmaceutical companies that supports their digital content needs throughout the entire product lifecycle. From research and development, to manufacturing and distribution, to marketing and sales, ebrary provides the e-books and digital content services that can help pharmaceutical companies increase productivity, while extending their information budgets.  Publishers include:  CRC Press, Elsevier Health Sciences, Informa Healthcare, Springer, and Wiley.
