Great news from Gale/Cengage and YBP (Baker & Taylor). GVRL, LitCrit and Gale Directory titles can now be purchased through YBP services. This is wonderful news and comes on the heels of the recenet B&T and ebrary partnership. Clearly publishers and aggregators are finally working together to make purchasing ebooks as seamless as the print book. It’s about time! What is unclear in the press release is the pricing of Gale titles. Typically these are sold on a Tier model, based on FTE. I’ll post more once I hear about the pricing.

I just had a nice conversation with John Barnes, Executive VP Strategic Marketing and Business Development, at Gale/Cengage. I asked John if Gale would be introducing new business models directed towards end users with their recent acquisition of HighBeam. Below is a brief summary of our discussion. Thanks John.
HighBeam’s clients are a combination of students and small businesses.
Gale/Cengage for several years has offered Goliath: Business Knowledge on Demand, which consists of business information, targeted to small business clients.
With the acquisition of HighBeam, Gale now owns encyclopedia.com, which John says, “has untapped potential to connect users to the library.” Their mission, to place “high quality embedded information in front of end users.”
So, rather than a new business model for end users, Gale will continue to make information more discoverable to end-users through encyclopedia.com, Goliath, and their existing AccessMyLibrary product. AccessMyLibrary allows a small slice of InfoTrac to be indexed by search engines. When users “want to see more” they are prompted to enter information about their library, which in turn takes search engine traffic to libraries.
Discoverability. It’s all about end users discovering our content, trapped in that invisible web. I’m anxious to see how Gale can embed quality content into encyclopedia.com. Wishful thinking, but maybe in time this could rival Wikipedia, with links to scholarly resources and digital and special library collections.

Gale/Cengage recently acquired HighBeam Research Inc. If you are unfamiliar with HighBeam, they are an online reference source with access to over 3500 resources from magazine/newspaper articles to journal articles to popular reference sources. HighBeam provides it’s services to companies, small groups, and individuals rather than libraries.
This is a very interesting acquisition to me. I anticipate many publishers will begin (or pump up) services direct to the end user or smaller organizations. Makes sense since most research is done on the open web rather than via a library database trapped in the invisible web.
From the press release: “The acquisition of HighBeam is a natural extension of our user-focused strategy. Gale has had a presence on the open Web for many years now, particularly with AccessMyLibrary, which brings users from search engines into a library environment to explore their vast content riches. Now, with the added expertise of HighBeam, Gale will have a greater opportunity to learn more about user behavior and research trends, and will use that information to further develop and enhance the user experience for all our products” said Sommers.

How to Increase Product Usage
Here are a few “best practices” as defined by your colleagues. Many of our customers have already discovered and implemented these ideas for increasing usage of electronic resources at their institution.
- Create a website that has a link to your electronic resources on the Home page.
- Keep links to databases, eBooks, journals, and magazines no more than 1 “click” away from the Home page.
- Register for AccessMyLibrary at http://access.gale.com/mylibrary/others/index.html.
- Create pathfinders for individual databases and have them accessible next to computers.
- Organize databases by subject and offer remote access.
- Place links to interesting content directly on your Home page. Gale InfoMarks (or durable URLs) navigate users directly to interesting content or current articles—bypassing the need to find a database or conduct a search.
- Use journal cover graphics on your Home page to take the user into a periodical database.
- Load MaRC records with URL’s to databases, eBooks, journals, and magazines
- Distribute product information material (user guides, search tips, etc) directly to your users.
- Use electronic databases to support curriculum through class assignments
- Integrate appropriate content into lesson plans.
- Market the library to teachers and work with them to create assignments using the product content.
- Offer library instruction and distribute product information and URL’s for parents or PTA
- Make library instruction mandatory for incoming students.
- Do not allow open web resources in bibliographies or works cited pages for assignments.
- Deploy a federated search engine
- Implement a journal locator application and linking through OpenURL

Gale and Greenwood eBook Partnership Expands
Current Greenwood Titles Now on Gale Virtual Reference Library
Farmington Hills, Mich., September 12, 2008 – Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, and Greenwood Publishing Group have enhanced their partnership to include more high-demand Greenwood titles, including more than 130 titles released in 2008 as eBooks on Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL). Previously, only titles published prior to 2005 were available on GVRL.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) contains more than 700 reference titles from more than 25 publishers, including Gale, Wiley, Sage, and Cambridge, and focuses on multivolume encyclopedias from a variety of fields. Purchased title by title, GVRL can be customized to fit any library. GVRL runs on the PowerSearch interface, which is clean and structured with many special features. Content is easy to navigate with browse, basic, and advanced searches. Users may select from three basic search options—keyword (default), document title, or full text. Keyword searches the title, introductory text, authors, and first 50 words of an article. GVRL’s advanced search offers several field-search types (document title, image caption, publication title, ISBN, author, start page, document number); limits by date, publication title, subject area, audience type, and documents with images; and search-history access—a feature unique to GVRL. Limits are only available on the advanced search screen. Results are ranked by relevance and may be sorted by document or publication title.
Several features stand out in GVRL. Articles are delivered in html (showing actual page breaks) with links to pdf versions. Users may mark, store, and export items for print, e-mail, or download. Multiple citation formats are included—APA, MLA, and plain text with direct exports to EndNote, Procite, RefWorks, and Reference Manager. Articles can be translated into eight languages (but be careful: translation is not exact but rather employs a gisting software). The InfoMark tool allows the user to obtain persistent links to books or articles with options to bookmark or e-mail. E-books include all front and back matter with hyperlinked tables of content and indexes. The Subcollection Manager Tool allows libraries to create small subject collections within GVRL that can be linked to courses or subjects on the library Web site and searched separately from other GVRL content. Many articles include a find-similar-articles option, which utilizes e-book indexes. Libraries may use the customization options to include messages, logos, and links to library services and to track usage. Users may set preferences of font, colors, language, and number of results per page during their sessions. The cost of individual titles is 10 percent above the print cost. Annual hosting fees range from $50 to $300 depending on the number of titles owned. – Sue Polanka
