Duke University Press launches new eBook platform

Duke University Press and HighWire Press are pleased to announce the launch of a new site for reading, searching, and sharing Duke University Press’s books: read.dukeupress.edu. Offering more than 1,600 titles and powered by the Folio eBooks solution, the site is the new home for the e-Duke Books Scholarly Collection, available to libraries for purchase.

Features of the new Drupal-based site developed by HighWire include responsive design, tailoring the attractive and functional interface to any device; DRM-free content; individual chapter downloads; and such tools as advanced search filters, social sharing, and reading recommendations, all of which deliver a rich, user-friendly reading and research experience. Duke University Press eBooks to move to HighWire

January 17, 2013 – – Duke University Press and HighWire Press are pleased to announce a major expansion of their partnership to include the e-Duke Books Scholarly Collection. Beginning with the 2014 collection, e-Duke Books, an annual collection of at least 100 new electronic books published by Duke University Press as well as more than 1,500 backlist titles, will move to HighWire’s Open Platform and the newly developed Folio e-book solution.

With the launch of the e-Duke Books Scholarly Collection on HighWire, Duke University Press’s readers and library subscribers will benefit from HighWire’s long record of innovation and reliability. The integrated platform will connect users with content more effectively by incorporating searching across all of Duke’s publications—not only e-books but their highly ranked journals as well. HighWire incorporates article-level metrics with ImpactStory

PALO ALTO, CA – 18 December 2012 — HighWire Press is pleased to announce it has entered into a strategic collaboration with ImpactStory, a researcher led, non-profit organization with a drive to help redefine the impact of research articles.

Article level metrics monitor the conversations around an article, as a complement to citation reports which measure a journal’s overall impact. ImpactStory aggregates impact data – the number of times an article is accessed and mentioned in editorials, news, tweets and blogs, as well as bookmarked, favorited, and recommended, in addition to those cited by another research paper, from sources such as CrossRef, Mendeley, and PubMed. Charleston Conference – Discoverability and Efficiency

Anh Bui, Executive Publication Manager, Books Products, at HighWire Press presented, “discoverability and efficiency: how users get to content they value.”  She quoted Clay Shirky, It’s really not information overload, it’s filter failure (Clay Shirky, 2008).  Ann stated that information filters can be used/activated by users or they can be used/activated by us (librarians/publishers).

E-Everything: Putting it All Together, A Charleston Preconference

On Wednesday, November 3rd the 30th Annual Charleston Conference will begin with a series of pre-conferences.  One of them is called E-everything: Putting it All Together.  Details of the program and speakers are listed below.  If you are interested in attending, you can register online.

Electronic resources continue to flood the library marketplace at a staggering rate and there is no turning back now.  Libraries are making an effort to accommodate the influx of electronic content while budgets and staffing levels continue to diminish. Publishers are undergoing a paradigm shift, trying to maintain traditional publishing models while experimenting with born digital content.

This full day pre-conference will discuss the current state of electronic resources from both the library and publishing perspectives and offer insight into the E-Everything future. Some of the current issues that will be addressed include access, content integration, technology, and discoverability.  Presentations by librarians and vendors will update you, challenge your thinking, stimulate questions and generate discussion.  Attendees will gain knowledge of the market and get ideas for plugging into the latest and the greatest information technologies for electronic content. Interview with Anh Bui, HighWire Press – eBook survey results

This year HighWire Press conducted a survey of librarian attitudes and opinions on eBooks.  The survey results were published last week.  I had a chance to discuss the survey with Anh Bui, Executive Publication Manager, Books Products of HighWire Press this week.  I welcome you to take a listen.  Anh welcomes comments and questions – anhbui@stanford.edu.

Librarians speak up about Ebooks – HighWire Press Survey Results

It’s a popular day for releasing survey results it seems.  Earlier we got Aptara’s results from a publisher survey on eBooks and now HighWire has released a survey on eBooks based on librarian input.  The result are in the full report.

According to HighWire, the report espouses some familiar and consistent themes:

  • Simplicity and ease of use seem more important than sophisticated end-user features.
  • Users tend to discover ebooks through both the library catalog and search engines.
  • While users prefer PDFs, format preference will likely change as technology changes.
  • DRM seems to hinder ebook use for library patrons; ability to print is essential.
  • The most popular business model for librarians is purchase with perpetual access.

At the Charleston Conference, I attended an all-day preconference workshop on e-books organized by Sue Polanka of Wright State University (who runs the blog No Shelf Required), Carolyn Morris of Coutts Information Services, and Janet Fischer of Publishers Communication Group, Inc. I was especially impressed with the final talk of the day, given by Anh Bui of HighWire Press, Stanford University–probably because she said things that support the ideas in our Long Civil Rights Movement online pilot!

Increasing the discoverability of ebooks means making sure they are easy to find when users are looking for them. Increasing the visibility means placing them in the user’s workflow even when they aren’t actively looking for them. Both initiatives are vital when placing books online. In this session we’ll discuss the issues surrounding the discoverability and visibility of ebooks, focusing on the academic, research, and clinical areas.
