Ingram announced today a partnership with Chegg, an online textbook rental company. The new e-textbook program from Chegg will allow students the option to purchase or rent digital books. DUBLIN, Ohio, April 11, 2011—OCLC and Ingram Content Group Inc. will soon offer a new service option that will provide library users short-term access to e-books not in their collection through WorldCat Resource Sharing and ILLiad.
The new service option, to launch in the coming months, expands access to library content available through WorldCat Resource Sharing to include access to e-books from Ingram’s MyiLibrary e-book collection for a period of up to nine days. E-book loans are fee-based, set at 15 percent of the MyiLibrary price for access to the e-book. The fee is managed through the WorldCat Resource Sharing interlibrary loan Fee Management feature, a service that supports payment of resource-sharing services through the library’s OCLC invoice. Skip Prichard, CEO and President of Ingram Content Group, provided a keynote full of energy and enthusiasm. (The video is available here.) His theme was the adoption of technology, change, taking risks, and staying true to the purpose of the company. Skip began with a general overview and summary of the technologies of today stating, “we are rushing to an age of connectivity,” location based services will have a profound impact on society (foursquare, etc.) and personalized content will have a huge impact – customized ads on billboards, contact lenses with virtual reality element, etc.

Ingram Content Group Inc. and Springer announced a new integrated distribution services model that combines traditional physical book fulfillment with single-copy print-on-demand solutions for Springer’s entire Americas publishing program. According to PR sources for Ingram, the Springer $24.95 My Copy program will continue with this partnership.

Starting in the first quarter of 2011, Ingram Content Group will fully manage warehousing, fulfillment and print-on-demand for Springer using the new model. Ingram will hold Springer’s entire US inventory and as it sells down, Ingram will transition titles to print-on-demand when it makes the most economic sense. All fulfillment will come through Ingram.

Each Friday before the ALA Conference, the Independent Reference Publishers Group (IRPG) gets together to have a program and discussion of issues surrounding reference publishing. The ALA Annual meeting was no exception. A large group of publishers and librarians gathered to figure out, “how did we get here?” A panel of librarians, LIS instructors, reference contributors, and wholesalers, organized by Peter Tobey at Salem Press, presented some thoughts and challenges for reference content and reference publishing. A summary of these comments is below. The panelists included: Buffy Hamilton, a teacher/librarian from Creekview H.S. in Canton, GA and blogger at The Unquiet Librarian and 1/4 blogger for Libraries and Transliteracy; Sue Polanka (me); Dave Tyckoson, Associate Dean of the Madden Library, CSU – Fresno; Bernadette Low, a frequent contributor to reference content from the Community College of Baltimore City; William Taylor, Manager, Continuations iSelect (R) and Standing Orders at Ingram Content Group; and Jessica Moyer, a doctoral candidate in literacy education at the U of Minnesota and instructor of a MLIS reference course.
