Lightning Source Heads “Down Under”

Macmillan to use Ingram’s print-on-demand service

From a press release:

Ingram Content Group Inc. and Macmillan today announced a new distribution services model that will integrate Ingram’s print on demand (POD) and fulfillment capability with Macmillan’s publishing program.  Macmillan will use Ingram’s print on demand and physical distribution infrastructure to manage traditional inventory and POD for “”long tail” titles.  Macmillan will continue to fully service its customer relationships from its primary warehouse in Virginia. Independent Reference Publishers Group (IRPG) Meeting Summary – ALA Conference

Each Friday before the ALA Conference, the Independent Reference Publishers Group (IRPG) gets together to have a program and discussion of issues surrounding reference publishing.  The ALA Annual meeting was no exception.  A large group of publishers and librarians gathered to figure out, “how did we get here?”  A panel of librarians, LIS instructors, reference contributors, and wholesalers, organized by Peter Tobey at Salem Press, presented some thoughts and challenges for reference content and reference publishing.  A summary of these comments is below.  The panelists included:  Buffy Hamilton, a teacher/librarian from Creekview H.S. in Canton, GA and blogger at The Unquiet Librarian and 1/4 blogger for Libraries and Transliteracy;  Sue Polanka (me);  Dave Tyckoson, Associate Dean of the Madden Library, CSU – Fresno;  Bernadette Low, a frequent contributor to reference content from the Community College of Baltimore City;  William Taylor, Manager, Continuations iSelect (R) and Standing Orders at Ingram Content Group;  and Jessica Moyer, a doctoral candidate in literacy education at the U of Minnesota and instructor of a MLIS reference course. Ingram’s Lightning Source enhances features

Ingram Content Group’s Lightning Source POD has introduced several new features including: new color interior hardcover book options, additional trim sizes for black and white interior books, expanded page count options for both perfect bound and hardcover books and a multi-volume set option, commonly used in the academic sector.  Continue reading

Accessibility Release for Ingram’s VitalSource Bookshelf

Last years law suit against 4 Universities piloting the Kindle reader as a eTextbook solution has done a lot to guarantee the accessibility of textbooks to all students.

Ingram Content Group, working with the American Foundation for the Blind consulting group (AFB Consulting), announced a new disability release for their eTextbook platform – VitalSource.  The release, which makes the application more usable for disabled students, contains extensive internal feature and function enhancements, as well as support for third-party screen-reader applications. These new features include the new DTD (Document Type Definition) v3.4 and VitalSource’s “MathSpeak” program which adds rich English-language articulation to MathML tags.  With this release, VitalSource is the only eTextbook platform on the market to offer full accessibility in downloads, online, and mobile access points for content.  Windows, Macintosh®, and online updates are expected in June, and iPhone®, iPod Touch®, and iPad™ releases in August. Ingram launches PubLink

Ingram announced today the launch of PubLink.  PubLINK is a web based tool for publishers to manage customer and media contact information and send galley copies and catalogs.  PubLink was beta tested by Macmillan.   Charles Bozian, VP of Finance and Administration for Macmillan said, “We could not be more impressed with Ingram’s PubLink,  the PubLink platform is a comprehensive solution for Macmillan’s galley needs, giving us the flexibility we need to serve our customers and media partners while enabling the transition from print to digital, seamlessly.  We see big benefits from an operational and cost standpoint over time.  This is where trade marketing is going.”

DOD offers audiobooks

A plethora of ebook readers are coming to the market along with a wide variety of solutions for libraries to serve them. Marcus Woodburn will give an overview of the digital solutions currently available (and rumored) and a sense of how the publishing world is adapting to them in terms of pricing and rights.  Which books are they making available?  What are the limitations?  What changes can we expect?  He will also examine digital textbook solutions serving the academic population directly, but which should hold interest for the library community.

Digital content is a growing part of library collections. Librarians would like to offer patrons the ability to effectively access and download this content to e-Readers, allowing for portability and greater interaction with the text. But, this type of service poses challenges.   What readers are available? Can a device that was developed for the consumer market work in an institutional setting? How much money should be budgeted to try them?   What factors should be considered when purchasing e-Readers for patron use?  Anne Behler will share her real-world experience with establishing an e-Reader pilot project at Penn State, which involved partnering with Sony Electronics, Inc. to investigate the e-Reader’s place in an academic setting.
