Yesterday at the LJ/SLJ eBook Summit I had the pleasure of moderating a panel discussion of the acquisition models of eBooks for academic libraries. We chatted about business models, workflow issues and their opportunities and challenges, the pros and cons of electronic access,and the future of eBooks. The LJ/SLJ eBook Summit on September 29th offers a variety of speakers and panel discussions relating to eBooks and libraries. One such session, eBooks and Academic Libraries: Toward a New Best Practice, will discuss the myriad opportunities and challenges in purchasing, acquiring, and accessing eBooks in an academic library. Speakers, representing publishers, libraries, and consortia, include: Michael Levine-Clark, an expert on patron driven acquisition from the University of Denver, Emily McElroy, who heads up the eBook Team for the Orbis Cascade Alliance, and Brett Rubinstein, manager of library sales for Springer. I’ll be moderating the session, live from 3:00 – 3:55 EDT.

Last week I spoke with Michael Levine-Clark, Collections Librarian from the University of Denver, about patron driven purchasing models and how they are being implemented at his library. Michael has been researching, testing, and writing about patron driven techniques for quite a while and discusses his experiences with me in the interview. I hope to make this topic, patron driven purchasing, a two-part interview, speaking with Jason Price and John McDonald from Claremont University in early August.

Routledge has dedicated two issues of their Collection Management journal to patron driven acquisition. Volume 35, issues 3 & 4, 2010 – Patron-Driven Acquisitions: Current Successes and Future Directions. The issues cover 4 general themes – introduction, acquiring print books through ILL requests, acquiring patron selected eBooks, and innovative services/new directions. I think it’s great they are providing an overview of how patrons have traditionally requested items (via ILL) in addition to the newer eBook models for short-term loans/leases and purchasing. I’m happy to see an article from Michael Levine-Clark from the University of Denver. I’m hoping to have an audio interview with him later this summer about PDA.
