Patterson Family Papers
A collection of correspondence, family histories, photographs, business records, and scrapbooks from two local pioneer families who played an important part in the early development of the Miami Valley: the Pattersons of Dayton and the Johnstons of Piqua. The business records cover the period 1785-1879 and relate to the operation of the Patterson Family farm and lumber mill. Some of Col. Robert Patterson's land surveys and quartermaster records are also included. The correspondence consists of letters between family members and friends, the bulk of which falls within the years 1820-1900. These letters are a good representation of 19th century life and discuss business, family affairs, daily activities, and politics. Of particular interest are the letters to Julia Johnston Patterson from her sons in the Union Army during the Civil War. The scrapbooks are an eclectic collection of newspaper clippings, programs, and memorabilia concerning John H. Patterson, the National Cash Register Company, and local and family history. The collection documents the local and regional history of Dayton and the Miami Valley in Ohio, and its role on a national scale, particularly during the period 1930 to 1980. Dayton’s history is a rich example of American ingenuity and perseverance. Considered the cradle of invention in the early 1900s, Dayton generated more patents than any other city in America. Creativity in technology, local government, literature, music, and dance are documented in the photographs. Dayton was the site of the invention of the airplane, the creation and implementation of the city manager form of government, and the first cash register. The Archives documents a strong history of the women’s club movement, innovative industrial development, dynamic political figures, ground-breaking aviation technology, a vital military establishment, strong progressivism, and diplomatic milestones, such as the Dayton Peace Accords. Dayton was the first city to establish a conservancy district to protect against devastating flood waters. This collection consists of a single pamphlet titled “The Diary of the House in the Woods,” which was published by the Lowe Brothers Company in Dayton, Ohio. The pamphlet is a combination of two people’s diaries. Katherine McDowell and her husband Ned allowed their diaries to be published to explain the development of their house that they built and in which they lived in the woods. The diary entries begin in May of 1918 and continue through October of the same year.
