The onset of winter marks the return of one of Dayton’s favorite pastimes, basketball.  Dayton is home to two storied Division I college basketball teams, the Raiders of Wright State University and the University of Dayton Flyers. Combined, the men’s teams  have more than forty postseason appearances and four national championships (the Raiders won the DII National Championship in 1983, Dayton won the NIT in 1962, 1968, and 2010). The women’s teams have combined for over half a dozen post season appearances. The Flyers women’s team won the AIAW Divisions II National Championship during the 1979-1980 season. The two schools, which have very loyal fans, play in state-of-the-art arenas that can each accommodate over 12 thousand spectators. Dayton’s college basketball teams are always competitive and provide great entertainment for students and the community. Reporters and Photographers from The Dayton Daily News and Journal-Herald were present at the games and captured some great moments in Dayton college basketball history. Please look through the album below for a sample of Flyer and Raider basketball photos located in the DDN collection. The photos are from some of the most memorable moments of the men’s and women’s teams, sure to delight regardless if you bleed green and gold or red and blue.

The Dayton area is also home to many outstanding high school boy’s and girl’s teams.   Basketball teams from the Miami Valley have won over twenty state titles in the past sixty years. Dayton is also the hometown of many basketball players who have gone on to distinguished careers in the NBA. The gallery below is a selection of DDN photos that highlight some of the great games and players in Dayton high school basketball history.
