Finding Family in the Archive

January 25, 2013
By

The following post was written by public history graduate student and Dayton Daily News Archive student worker Marcus Manchester, who stumbled upon some fascinating stories about a family member while working with the files of the DDN Archive: A few weeks ago, I was filing something away, and I came across a folder of...

Final Stages of the Project

The goal of the NHPRC grant was to have the DDN Collection minimally processed  by the end of 2012. I am happy to say that we will meet that deadline as we are finalizing the project. The database is complete with only a few touchups needed. All the boxes are processed and we are...

Some of My Favorite Photos from the Collection

August 31, 2012
By

In the almost two years we have been processing the DDN collection, the same few photos always seem to surface. They have become a very familiar site around the office as they are used both for displays and as talking points when describing the collection. These photos aren’t of world leaders or famous events,...

Orville Wright

December 21, 2011
By

The two brothers are credited with inventing and building the world’s first successful airplane and making the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight. This December marks the 108th anniversary of that fabled first flight, which was on December 17, 1903....

Thanks to her help, we have 300 record storage boxes of names finalized.  We are currently working on the “K” names and expect to be on...

200 Boxes Processed!

July 13, 2011
By

Last week we processed the 200th record storage box of the collection. The last names of A-G from the Personality Files are integrated and ready for permanent placement on the shelves.  The time and effort required to complete the 200 boxes speaks to the volume of this collection; it is massive. We estimate that,...

DDN Preservation

May 2, 2011
By

As with any collection, the processing archivist needs to be mindful of preservation concerns. Luckily the DDN collection was maintained with some degree of professional standards. Collections that are not maintained by a trained archivist are often full of staples, adhesives, and other acidic material.  The staff at the paper was knowledgeable of basic...

DDN Collection Series

April 4, 2011
By

In March we began to minimally process the collection. Before we could get to this stage we had to create the series and subseries for the collection. The DDN collection is made up of the holdings of two separate newspapers; The Dayton Daily News (DDN) and the Dayton Journal Herald (JH). Each paper had...

Some Background on the Dayton Daily News Archive
