This collection was donated by Jane Newberry, an active member of the Dayton League of Women Voters. Included are various issues of the League's newsletters and an assortment of reports, papers, and surveys on such topics as education, welfare, mental health, foreign policy, prison reform, housing, taxes, and pollution. Ruth Herr was an art teacher in the Dayton and Oakwood public schools. The materials in this collection reflect her interest in women's rights and include a constitution and bylaws for the National Women's Party, a speech by Mrs. Herr, several copies of the women's Party newspaper, Egual Rights, and clippings and miscellaneous material pertaining to the Women's Party. Founded in 1973 by a group of local feminists, the Dayton Women's Center was created to provide a space for local women to meet, organize, and share common interests and concerns. Clauser is a Yellow Springs author who has written extensively for television and also published a novel. Organized in 1975, Dayton Women Working was a feminist organization concerned with insuring equal employment opportunities locally for women and minorities. The records consist of meeting minutes, by-laws, membership records, progress reports, newsletters, broadsides, and files documenting DWW's public programs and projects including a study of discrimination in three Dayton banks. There is also material pertaining to DWW's affiliation with other working women's organizations and the transcript of an interview with one of the organization's founders. Finding aid available.

Records consist of a fairly complete run of the organization's newsletter which gives information about the group's meetings and activities and includes short articles discussing the politics and ideology of the Women's Movement. Born and raised in Yellow Springs, Carr had a long, distinguished career working in Europe for the Red Cross and the Near East Foundation as a nurse and public health administrator. Her papers include extensive correspondence, journal articles, reports, working papers, clippings,genealogical materials, and photographs. Finding aid available.
MS-139 PEACOCK, JERUSHA HALL (1843-1878).

Jerusha Peacock was a student at Antioch College in Yellow Springs in the early 1860's, and later taught at Antioch's Preparatory School from 1865-1873. Her papers consist of letters written primarily to her mother and sisters, essays, a collection of her poetry, and a sketchbook. Peacock's letters colorfully describe her life at Antioch, her travels, acquaintances, and activities. Finding aid available.
MS-141 SOCIALIST-FEMINIST CONFERENCE.

Records in this collection document the planning and organization of a national Socialist-Feminist conference held in July, 1975, at Antioch College in Yellow Springs. Materials include organizational papers, Steering Committee minutes, correspondence, working papers, registration details, women's movement pamphlets, and printed materials relating to the conference. MS-143 WEISENBORN, CLARA. (1910-1985).
Papers, 1960-1980. 3.5 lin. ft.
Weisenborn represented Montgomery County in the Ohio State Legislature for over 20 years. Her papers consist primarily of files connected with her legislative career and include working papers, committee reports, bills, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Weisenborn's most active areas of interest were the environment, health, and education. While detailing her work in the Ohio Legislature, the papers offer very little insight into her personal life. MS-146 BROWN, KATHARINE KENNEDY. (1890-1986).

Brown was an important figure in the Republican Party from 1920 until 1968. The bulk of materials in this collection are connected with her activities as the National Republican Party Committeewoman from Ohio. Political materials include correspondence, publications, campaign records, convention and election memorabilia, photographs, and records reflecting her activities with state and national GOP women's organizations. Correspondents include major Republican leaders and presidents Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Eisenhower, and Nixon. Her papers also include personal and family materials consisting of diaries, correspondence, and financial records dating from the 1830's. Finding aid available.
MS-147 BROWN, MARTHA MCCLELLAN. (1838-1916).
Papers, 1764-1916. 8.5 lin. ft.
A nationally known leader in the temperance movement as well as a strong advocate of women's rights and suffrage, Martha McClellan Brown lectured widely in the United States and Great Britain and held important posts in the Independent Order of Good Templars and the National Prohibition Party. She was also one of the founders of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and edited a weekly temperance newspaper. Her papers include copies of her published talks and articles, handwritten drafts of lectures, personal correspondence, temperance and suffrage publications, photographs, memorabilia, and a small collection of materials reflecting her interest in Spiritualism. Also included are papers belonging to Brown's husband, Rev. William K. Brown, a Methodist minister with a strong interest in women's rights and the temperance movement. His papers include sermons, published articles, correspondence, church papers, and two books he authored. Finding aid available.
MS-151 REECE, JANE. (1868-1961).
Photographs, 1903-1944. 63 lin. ft.
Consists of the glass plate and film negatives of an internationally known Dayton photographer, an associate of Steiglitz and Steichen, and one of the first professional female photographers in the United States. Collection contains over 10,000 images and is roughly divided into two portions: the portraits, many of prominent individuals, by which Reece made her living; and the creative photographs of her salon. MS-161 ODIORNE, LOUISE HARRIS (1910-1975).

Louise Odiorne was a landscape architect and planner working out of Yellow Springs, Ohio. The papers in this collection reflect her wide-ranging interests in community planning, environmental architecture, regenerative land use and conservation. Included are personal and professional papers, grants, papers pertaining to several land use projects in and around Yellow Springs, and materials concerned with Odiorne's most important work, the Life- Clime Project, an idea for establishing an indoor symbiotic relationship between plants and people. MS-170 O'BRIEN, PATRICIA ADELAIDE (1877-1980).

A native of Sharonville, Ohio, Patricia O'Brien was a successful singer and actress in New York City during the early part of this century. She returned to Dayton in 1917 and became manager of the Dayton Symphony Association. She also worked as a promoter of local theatrical events. Her papers include correspondence, photographs, diaries, and miscellaneous items. Finding aid available.

A collection of 19th and early 20th century papers consisting mainly of the family correspondence of the Wheeler and Betts families as they moved around the midwest. MS-177 JOHNSON, AMY (1903-1941).

Johnson, an English aviator, became an instant celebrity after piloting her DeHavilland Gypsy Moth from London to Australia in 1930, a long distant flight no woman had ever attempted. Her papers include the manuscript of her unpublished biography, written by her sister, as well as correspondence, personal papers, and photographs. Finding aid available.

Richard Fullerton was a local photograph historian and collector. His Jane Reece collection consists primarily of images which document the renovation of Reece's home and studio, an old firehouse on 834 Riverside Drive in Dayton, and photographs and information about the surrounding neighborhood. Also included are interior and exterior photographs of Reece's studio and a few examples of her artistic photography. Finding aid available.

Collection consists of 89 photographs of Dayton photographer, Jane Reece, owned by Josephine Schwarz. Included are images of Dayton Ballet founders, Josephine and Hermene Schwarz, the Schwarz Family, Reece self-portraits, and nature photographs. Finding aid available.

The Josephine Schwarz Papers consist of a collection of the personal correspondence, photographs, writings, and memorabilia of Josephine and, to a lesser extent, the personal papers of her sister Hermene Schwarz. The collection encompasses a wide range of topics, including the Schwarz School of Dance, the Dayton Ballet, correspondence concerning dance and ballet-related issues, personal correspondence with family, friends, and students, her journals, diaries, and scrapbooks, ballet and family photographs, and memorabilia. The Helen Hunt Club was a women's literary organization founded in 1891 by a group of Dayton school teachers. The group studied and read papers on literary subjects and produced a play each year. Records consist of a constitution and by-laws, meeting minutes, club programs, correspondence, and the manuscript of a novel written by several club members ca. 1910. Finding aid available.
MS-231 PATTERSON, EDITH MCCLURE (1881-1962).

Edith McClure Patterson served on the Dayton Board of Education during the early 1930's and from 1915-1939 she was the first woman to serve on the Ohio Board of Liquor Control. In 1932, she ran, unsuccessfully, for Congress. Patterson was active in welfare and education work, and made a lifelong study of problems affecting the home and children. Her papers and scrapbooks are a source of information about local Dayton education, budget and thrift, home management, women's club's, and liquor control. Also included are materials pertaining to the National Cash Register Company. Mrs. Patterson was a niece, by marriage, of John H. Patterson, founder and first executive officer of NCR. The Young Women's League of Dayton was founded in 1898 by former members of the local YWCA. It's purpose was to "promote the moral, mental, and physical welfare of young women" and its activities supported, in particular, young working women. Records include minutes, financial records, publications, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and materials pertaining to the League's operation of a boarding house for young women. Dayton native, Margaret Shardelow Young, was a member of the Friday Afternoon Club, one of the city’s oldest women’s literary clubs. She was also a local school teacher and long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Dayton. The collection includes her Friday Afternoon Club writings, schoolbooks, teaching notes, photographs, and greeting cards with her original poetry. Finding aid available.

Katherine Talbot founded the Garden Club of Dayton on 29 June 1922. The Club's goal is to promote and encourage the beautification of not only their privately owned gardens, but also the gardens and environment of Oakwood and the surrounding Dayton area. The Friday Afternoon Club was founded in 1893 as a literary club for women in the Dayton area. Aside from academic and literary studies, the Friday Afternoon club also enjoys social events such as lectures, plays and picnics. Still in existence, the club meets every other Friday at the homes of its members. The collection consists of minutes and membership rosters, financial records, yearly programs, and scrapbooks. Edith Holsinger was an English teacher, teaching at both Fairmount West High School and Barnes Jr. High School. In 1964, Holsinger aided in the creation of the Kettering Teachers Union and was an active participate in the union until her retirement. The Widows Home of Dayton Collection chronicles the history of the home from its inception in 1870 through 2002. The collection was donated to Wright State by Janett S. Cavender, President of the Board of Directors of the Widows Home. The collection includes pictures, slides, deeds, daily census records, board minutes, newspaper clippings and administration records, including budgets and fund raising activities from the beginning of the home to the present. Established in 1907, the College Women's Club of Dayton (CWC) continues to meet monthly during the fall, winter, and spring months for the purpose of uniting "alumnae of institutions of higher learning, and to foster an interest in higher education." The club continues to promote higher education, offers continuing education through their study group experiences activities encourages service to the community. MS-329 CHRIST CHILD SOCIETY.

Mary Virginia Merrick founded the Christ Child Society in 1887 in Washington, D.C. to aid poor children. On October 11, 1911 Marie and Helen Rotterman founded the Dayton Chapter of the Christ Child Society. The society began with fewer than 200, primarily Catholic, women, yet grew steadily throughout the century. The group's primary focus is to provide clothing and aid to needy women and children. The collection includes minutes, photographs, and committe files. Finding aid available.

The mission of the Progressive Mothers’ Club was to promote the role and education of mothers within the setting of a social group. The collection illustrates the Club’s purpose through yearly event books, financial records, membership records, scrapbooks, meeting minutes, photographs, and newspaper clippings. MFM-117 HASKELL, KATHARINE WRIGHT (1874-1929).
Papers, 1922-1928. 2 reels.
Papers consist mainly of correspondence from Katharine Wright to her future husband, Henry J. Haskell. Letters cover a variety of personal matters including the opposition to her impending marriage by her brother, Orville Wright. Other subjects discussed include Oberlin College, the Kansas City Star, the Wright patent challenge, and Katharine's ideas about women's rights. Finding aid is included.
