Open Access Symposium – October 22

Wright State University/Cleveland State University Joint Open Access Symposium
October 22, 2014, 9:15am – 3:45pm; Room 441, Dunbar Library

The Wright State University Libraries, the Friends of the Libraries, and Digital Services invite you to the Wright State University/Cleveland State University Joint Open Access Symposium. This event will feature speakers on the topic of copyright, open access, and open data, with a Keynote presented by Dr. Caroline Whitacre, VP for Research at The Ohio State University, who will speak about the SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem) Initiative on which she is a steering group committee member. SHARE, born out of the White House initiative calling for the free and open sharing of publicly funded research, is a steering group that pulls together stakeholders from the research community to guide policy and build the infrastructure for storing, preserving, and sharing research and data.

ALS Challenge Accepted

If you’re like us, for a few weeks this summer your Facebook News Feed blew up with videos of your friends and family dumping ice water over their heads. P1010804

While these videos were funny and got your attention, they also helped spread awareness about an incurable, degenerative disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named for the famous American baseball player who brought national attention to the disease in 1939.

P1010801The Wright State University Libraries were challenged to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge by the University of Dayton Libraries and we accepted that challenge. In fact, we had so many staff volunteers we had to complete the challenge in two waves. Watch our Youtube video to see us get soaked.

Through donations from challenge participants and an audience of our staff we were able to raise over $175 for the ALS Association. We challenged the Greene County Library, Dayton Metro Library, Bepress, Wright State Athletics, Wright State Admissions and Hospitality Services (specifically the baristas at our new Starbucks).

We were really impressed with Greene County Libraries’ response. Check out their video.

This is another great example of the power of social media. Happy helping!
