In December, Provost Thomas Sudkamp named Sue Polanka, Associate University Librarian for Public Services, to the position of Interim University Librarian, effective January 1, 2018.
Sue Polanka has 28 years of experience in libraries, with 13 of those served here at Wright State. She earned a Master of Library Science degree from Kent State University in 1995. Prior to Associate University Librarian, Sue was Head of the Reference and Instruction Department. She has also served on the Administrative Council for the University Libraries, and led the development and implementation of the University Libraries Strategic Plan. In October, 2017 Sue was awarded the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award by the Academic Library Association of Ohio.
An interview with Sue Polanka:
Why do you like working in libraries?
Librarianship is extremely gratifying to me because of the service orientation and focus on life-long learning. I enjoy connecting users with information. Libraries are always anticipating the needs of the community as well, so this brings opportunities for growth and change.
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities you see with your new position?
Challenges – Maintaining our extensive collections, top-notch staff, and wide array of services during this difficult budget climate.
Opportunities – Creating new partnerships on campus and in the community; working with the Friends of the Libraries who are celebrating their 40th Anniversary, and assisting with the “Discover Your Story” campaign for the WSU Archives Center.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about libraries?
I wish people knew more about the connection between library collections, staff, services and student success. There are a number of studies showing that students who use the library’s resources and work with library staff tend to have higher GPAs, greater retention, and are more likely to graduate on time as a result of their interactions with the library. Our staff help students and faculty succeed with their research and information needs every day.
What is something you like to do for fun when you’re not at work?
I enjoy traveling, cooking, fitness classes, and spending quality time with my family and friends and my dog, Maya.
On behalf of the University Libraries’ Social Media Team, thank you for your continued service to Wright State, Sue. Welcome to your new position.
