Thursday, November 11th is Veterans Day. On this day we honor and remember those who served our country in the armed forces. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Veterans Day (then known as Armistice Day) on November 11, 1919 to commemorate the end of World War One and to remember those that served in the conflict. In proclaiming the holiday, he said:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”
Though its origins are from WWI, on Veterans Day we remember all of America’s veterans and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Below is a selection of photos from the DDN collection that highlights veterans and Veteran’s Day ceremonies from the Miami Valley. Because this year marks the 70th anniversary of America’s entry into WWII, most of the photos are of those who served during that time.
