This picture of the Reichstag was taken after the end of the war, and shows the extent to which the building was damaged. Following a fire in 1933, the building was further damaged during the war by Allied bombing raids, and even more extensively during the Battle of Berlin. Interestingly, while the Reichsta the Nazi government rarely met in the building, it was iconic of Allied, and especially Soviet, victory. The building was captured over the course of three days of fierce fighting. The building would sit unoccupied for over forty years until the fall of the Berlin wall, when the building was renovated to become the seat of the new German government. The phrase, “Dem Deutschen Volke” or “For the German People” remains above the entrance of the building today. There are also still battle scars visible on certain parts of the building today.
