Kirk Herbstreit

Centerville, Ohio, native Kirk Herbstreit, is an Emmy Award-winning color commentator for ESPN’s College GameDay and ABC Saturday Night Football. He made headlines recently as he renegotiated his contract with ESPN and will stay at the network for the next ten seasons. Also beginning in 2015, he will be in the booth for one of the new NCAA College Football Playoff semifinals as well as the National Championship Game.

Herbstreit was a standout football and baseball player at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio. And in 1988 he signed with the Ohio State University Buckeyes, where his father once played and coached.

Herbstreit gained national notoriety as a quarterback for OSU, especially his senior year in 1992. After waiting his turn as a starter, he finally led the team that year as its starting quarterback and co-captain. The Buckeyes lost to the Georgia Bulldogs that year in the Florida Citrus Bowl, but not before Herbstreit could pass for 1,904 yards, including four 200+ yard games and be voted the team MVP.

His father, Jim Herbstreit, had been a co-captain of the 1960 Ohio State team, and was later an assistant coach at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. The older Herbstreit also coached with Bo Schembechler at Miami of Ohio.

Though no longer a Buckeye state resident, Herbstreit still involves himself in the local-state community through various charities. The photos on this post chronicle Herbstreit’s time at Centerville and OSU.
