John Patterson Writes Home

On June 1, 1864, Private John H. Patterson wrote a letter to his mother from Fort Worthington, near Washington, D.C.  The letter is the first of several letters John writes about his activities with the 131st Ohio National Guard on 100 days duty manning forts in the Washington, D.C. area.

In this letter John writes about a trip he made into town where he visited a market house, rode a street car to Druid Hill Park, and hired a boat to take him to Fort Federal Hill.  The letter concludes with a brief description of the suppertime meal he will have at the fort.  (Transcript of John H.
