This collection consists of over 2,000 photographs and negatives collected, and in some cases taken by Richard Fullerton, who spent his career in the photography laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The portrait photography in the collection represents predominant photographic processes, portraiture styles, and formats from the second half of the 19th century. The collection contains tintypes, cartes-de-visites, cabinet cards, albumen prints, platinum prints, matte collodion prints, silver gelatin prints, and negatives. WACO Aircraft Company Photographic Collection (also known as Raymond H. Brandly Collection)
The WACO Aircraft Company of Troy, Ohio produced aircraft from 1923 through WWII. During that period, the company maintained professional photography services to record images of their products. Following the company's decision to cease all operation and during the liquidation of the original assets, Mr. Raymond H. Brandly legally acquired the WACO Aircraft Company's original factory photo negatives from the management of the company. This large collection of negatives and prints contains the actual images recorded by WACO Aircraft Company photographers throughout the company's history, during the manufacturing of WACO airplanes. Brandly used some of the images in his series of books, which were printed in the 1980s. At that time, Brandly had prints made of many of the negatives. The Glenn Curtiss Collection of Early Aviation Photographs contains 174 photographs and photographic postcards showing the development of Glenn Curtiss' aviation and aircraft construction careers between 1908 and 1915. Landmark events in Curtiss' career, such as the 1910 Euclid Beach flight in Cleveland and the 1914 rebuild of the Langley Aerodrome, are featured in the collection. This collection highlights the work and family of Dayton poet, Paul Shivell. An accomplished poet published in the late 19th- and early 20th centuries, Shivell was recognized for his pastoral poems which were published in several books and collections. Photographs, negatives, and news clippings, span obituary, personality, and subject files generated by the Dayton Daily News and the former Journal Herald in the twentieth century. The collection documents the local and regional history of Dayton and the Miami Valley in Ohio, and its role on a national scale, particularly during the period 1930 to 1980. Dayton's history is a rich example of American ingenuity and perseverance. Considered the cradle of invention in the early 1900s, Dayton generated more patents than any other city in America. Creativity in technology, local government, literature, music, and dance are documented in the photographs. Dayton was the site of the invention of the airplane, the creation and implementation of the city manager form of government, and the first cash register. Two of the images bear the photographer's stamp of William Preston Mayfield. Another was taken by Jackson W. Armstrong Photography. And a fourth image is marked "Kaufmann & Abry" for the famous architectural photography firm. The other images in the collection contain no descriptive or copyright information on the back though it is thought they were taken by a foreman at the plant named Robert Allen. Some of the photos have "crop" marks and are supposedly Allen's, taken for inclusion in the company newsletter McCall Spirit.
