Martha McClellan Brown and Rev. William Kennedy Brown Papers
A nationally known leader in the temperance movement as well as a strong advocate of women's rights and suffrage, Martha McClellan Brown lectured widely in the United States and Great Britain and held important posts in the Independent Order of Good Templars and the National Prohibition Party. She was also one of the founders of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and edited a weekly temperance newspaper. Her papers include copies of her published talks and articles, handwritten drafts of lectures, personal correspondence, temperance and suffrage publications, photographs, memorabilia, and a small collection of materials reflecting her interest in Spiritualism. Also included are papers belonging to Brown's husband, Rev. William K. Brown, a Methodist minister with a strong interest in women's rights and the temperance movement. Dayton Police Department Historical Collection
This collection was created through the efforts of several Dayton Police Department officers and the Dayton Police History Foundation, Inc. Included in the collection are the arrest files of many different criminals, most notably notorious criminals of the early twentieth century like John Dillinger and "Bugs" Moran. The bulk of the information includes Bertillon card photographs from the turn of the century, various personnel photos, many negatives, news-clippings saved by the D.P.D., and two "retired" police training DVDs from the middle of the 20th century. James Middleton Cox Papers
Consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, photographs, clippings, and other printed materials relating to Cox's long career as a journalist and politician. Cox was a U.S. Congressman representing Ohio's 3rd District from 1909-1913, and the governor of Ohio from 1913-1915 and from 1917-1921. In 1920 he was the Democratic nominee for President with Franklin D. Roosevelt as his running mate. Cox was also the owner and publisher of several newspapers including the Dayton Daily News and the Dayton Journal Herald. The bulk of the material in this collection is correspondence covering such topics as local, national, and international politics, labor, monetary policy, economic matters, and journalism. A partial list of nationally known correspondents includes: William Jennings Bryan, Bernard Baruch, Josephus Daniels, James Farley, Cordell Hull, Walter Lippmann, Sam Rayburn, Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, Harry Truman, Woodrow Wilson, and Orville and Wilbur Wright. Congressman Edward G. Breen Collection
This collection contains the papers of Edward G. Breen, a Dayton, Ohio native and Democratic Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives for the third district of Ohio from 1949-1951. Before being elected to Congress, Breen served in the Air Force during World War II, he then served as mayor for the city of Dayton upon his return home from war. After serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, Breen was elected to the Board of Commissioners for Montgomery County. Three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings from the 1940s document Breen's media coverage as hotel manager, Dayton mayor, and Montgomery County Commissioner. A fourth scrapbook contains materials relating to the family life of the Breen's, including wedding photos, newspaper clippings, and family photos. Photographs, negatives, and news clippings, span obituary, personality, and subject files generated by the Dayton Daily News and the former Journal Herald in the twentieth century. The collection documents the local and regional history of Dayton and the Miami Valley in Ohio, and its role on a national scale, particularly during the period 1930 to 1980. Dayton's history is a rich example of American ingenuity and perseverance. Considered the cradle of invention in the early 1900s, Dayton generated more patents than any other city in America. Creativity in technology, local government, literature, music, and dance are documented in the photographs. Dayton was the site of the invention of the airplane, the creation and implementation of the city manager form of government, and the first cash register. The Archives documents a strong history of the women's club movement, innovative industrial development, dynamic political figures, ground-breaking aviation technology, a vital military establishment, strong progressivism, and diplomatic milestones, such as the Dayton Peace Accords. Dayton was the first city to establish a conservancy district to protect against devastating flood waters. The spirit and history of Dayton's innovators and the lives of its citizens are told in the photographs and stories recorded in the newspaper. Occupy Dayton Oral History Project
The Occupy Dayton Oral History Project was a graduate capstone project initiated and completed by Wright State graduate student in history, Kyle Pitzer. Mr. Pitzer interviewed six participants and leaders of the Dayton manifestation of the Occupy Wall Street movement which began in New York City in late summer 2011. These demonstrations soon spread throughout the country with Dayton holding its first protest in early October, 2011.
