Papers consist of mainly correspondence from Katharine Wright (1874-1929) to her future husband, Henry J. Haskell. Letters cover a variety of personal matters including the opposition to her impending marriage by her brother, Orville Wright. Wright Brothers Collection
A supplement to the main body of Orville and Wilbur Wright's papers located in the Library of Congress, this collection consists of family letters and papers, financial records, school mementos, genealogical material, the church papers and diaries of the Wrights' father (Bishop Milton Wright), notebooks, citations, awards, and the Wright's technical library which includes journals books, and pamphlets covering many aspects of early aeronautics. The collection also includes nearly 4,000 photographs, many of which are original prints taken by the Wrights to document their early flying experiments. In addition, there are extensive photographs of the Wright family and of the Wrights' flying exhibitions in Europe and the United States. Bergen Hardesty (1915-1994) was a trained draughtsman and as a hobby built realistic model airplanes. WACO Aircraft Company Photographic Collection (also known as Raymond H. Brandly Collection)
The WACO Aircraft Company of Troy, Ohio produced aircraft from 1923 through WWII. During that period, the company maintained professional photography services to record images of their products. Following the company's decision to cease all operation and during the liquidation of the original assets, Mr. Raymond H. Brandly legally acquired the WACO Aircraft Company's original factory photo negatives from the management of the company. This large collection of negatives and prints contains the actual images recorded by WACO Aircraft Company photographers throughout the company's history, during the manufacturing of WACO airplanes. Brandly used some of the images in his series of books, which were printed in the 1980s. At that time, Brandly had prints made of many of the negatives. The Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Engine Drawing Collection is a collection of over 50,000 aircraft engine part and power system drawings produced by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. The collection consists of approximately 1300 rolls of microfilm containing thousands of engine part drawings, more than a thousand engine drawings, an index to the engine parts that were microfilmed, cards documenting tools used to make the engine parts, and a number of aircraft engine manuals. Bernard Lindenbaum was an aeronautical engineer with the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory (AFFDL) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio from the mid-1940s until the mid-1970s. During his time with the laboratory, he was involved in the research and development of many types of vertical take-off and landing aircraft (VTOL) including the Avro "Avrocar," a number of Sikorsky helicopters, the Vought XC-142 tilt wing, and many other similar aircraft. This is the personal aviation collection of Robert E. Williams. The majority of this collection is composed of photographs of various aircraft, mostly external aerial shots. Major General Henry T. Allen was an officer in the U.S. Army from 1882 to 1923. He fought in the Spanish-American War and World War I. His daughter married Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews (See MS-440). The Wright Company was formed in November 1909 with Wilbur Wright as President and Orville Wright one of two Vice-Presidents. In 1915, Orville sold the company to a group of investors, which later merged the company with the Martin Company. The records consist of copies of material from the Wright Company Records held by the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. Included in the records are Wright Company board of directors meeting minutes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and legal documents, including articles of incorporation, selling of the company, and the merger with the Martin Company. Also included are copies of ledgers that document a variety of financial transactions. The records do not include any information concerning Wright Company personnel. Orville and Wilbur Wright never constructed a complete set of drawings for any of their flyers or gliders. In the mid-1940s, friend of the Wright's, Edward Deeds, commissioned Louis P. Christman, to complete, not only a set of drawings for the famous 1903 Flyer, but also the 1900, 1901, and 1902 Gliders, and the 1903 and 1904 Flyers. This collection contains Christman's original drawings of the 1903 Flyer's Engine Support Rails and Wing Ribs. Fred F. Marshall Papers
The Fred F. Marshall Papers reflect Marshall's career as an engineer, aviation journalist, photographer, environmentalist, and local historian. Marshall was attached to the Signal Corps in World War I; he then returned to Dayton to work at McCook Field where he was editor of the aviation journal, Slipstream. Retiring in 1955 after working for several engineering and aircraft firms, Marshall devoted his time to writing articles dealing with the history of the Yellow Springs, Clifton, and Cedarville areas of Greene County. The collection includes drafts and finalized copies of original stories, newspaper clippings, correspondence, certificates, awards, scrapbooks, as well as a large number of photographs both personal and related to military life in World War I. Marshall authored a number of local histories including a chronology of the Wright Brothers. A few items in the collection relate to Fred Marshall's wife, Faith Marshall. Modification Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. Northwest Airlines expanded their facilities in 1943 which included a new Modification Center in Vandalia, Ohio. Schneider was reassigned to the Vandalia location in 1943. The Wright Family to Petree Family Correspondence primarily contains letters written by Milton Wright to his niece Estella Harris Petree. The letters describe Wright family news and activities, but more importantly include specific references to Wilbur and Orville Wright's bicycle business, flying experiments and success, Orville Wright's accident at Ft. Myer in September 1908, the 1913 Dayton flood, and Milton's flight with Orville in May 1910. This two-page letter and accompanying envelope is from Mrs. Francis (Mary) Winter to Mrs. Tasker (Eleanor) Bliss. Mrs. Winter's husband, Major Francis A. Winter, was the surgeon who cared for Orville Wright at the hospital at Fort Myer, Virginia, after Wright's September 17, 1908 crash there. The accident resulted in the death of Wright's passenger, U. S. Army Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge, whose death is considered the first powered airplane fatality. In the letter Winter devotes an entire paragraph to describing the accident. Also included in this collection is a one-page transcript of the letter. F. Glen Shoemaker Letter
The collection consists of a single letter dated January 18, 1926, from F. Glen Shoemaker, an aeronautical engineer at McCook Field, to a friend, describing a long-distance flight he took in November 1925. Shoemaker was the passenger in an open-cockpit plane ("a regular D.H. [De Havilland aircraft] with a Liberty 12 engine") piloted by Lt. C. H. Ridenour, Chief of the Power Plant division. They traveled from Dayton to Washington, D.C., and Langley Field; New York City; Sidney, N.Y. (near Binghamton), and Philadelphia. Wilbur F. H. Bigelow, Sr., Dayton-Wright Company Collection
Wilbur F. H. Bigelow, Sr., was a foreman in the Mill department of Dayton-Wright Airplane Company factory at Moraine (Plant 1), during World War I. The collection consists primarily of 28 photographs, most of which relate to Bigelow's work at the factory, including DH-4 aircraft, employees and factory scenes, air demonstration shows, and aerial photographs captured during a test flight. Photos unrelated to Dayton-Wright Airplane include: one photo depicts the Wright Brothers' Homecoming in June 1909, one depicting a crash at McCook Field in 1917, one of Hills and Dales Country Club, and five at an unidentified outdoor location. Individuals in the photographs include Wilbur's wife, Helen; his daughter, Janice Pahnke; mechanic Charles Irwin, and pilot Bernard Whelan. Also included are three documents related to Bigelow's WWI draft status, a piece of wing fabric from an aircraft that crashed in Dayton in 1928, and a commemorative coin from the Dayton "Frontiers of Freedom" celebration in 1941.
