The Presidential Campaign of Governor Romney

October 3, 2012

Governor Mitt Romney is preparing for tonight’s first of three presidential debates to take place before the November election. Governor Romney has been in the national spotlight since 2008 when he began his first run at the Presidency. Mr. Romney is no stranger to politics as his father, George Romney, ran for the Republican Party nomination in the 1968 election. He was unsuccessful in his bid and Nixon became the nominee for the GOP. George Romney was a successful businessman as he served as the President of American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1954-1962. He was the 43rd Governor for the State of Michigan and, after the 1968 election, was appointed by President Nixon as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

He was noted for his interest in philanthropy and volunteerism. His legacy includes, among other philanthropic pursuits, the Points of Light Foundation and support for the Michigan United Way. In 1998 Brigham Young University honored George Romney by naming their Institute of Public Management after the Governor.

Although the DDN collection does not contain any photos of the Governor campaigning in Ohio, I thought this would be a great addition to the Presidential Series as his son is currently in a near statistical tie for the White House.  And just like the George H.W. Bush post, we did find four pictures of a young Mitt Romney and Ann Romney. They are posted below. Please click on the photos to read the captions.
