Sample Citations from our Collections

The following sample citations demonstrate the particular elements that one might include in citations for a variety of archival materials. These citations were modeled approximately in Turabian's Chicago Style; however, the elements could be rearranged and reformatted to fit any style guide. The most important thing is to provide adequate information for locating the item again. All of the archival materials cited below are actual items that can be found in the Wright State University Libraries Special Collections & Archives.

A Note on Published Materials within Archival Collections:

If published materials, such as books, are encountered in an archival collection, it may be sufficient to simply cite the item in the manner your style guide recommends for that particular format (e.g., book). However, if it is critical that this particular copy be consulted (e.g., if it includes handwritten notes by its owner), then it is one-of-a-kind archival material, and the additional details of collection and repository are critical to the citation. Use your best judgment or consult the archivist for advice.

Example #1

A copy of History of the 322nd Field Artillery can be found in Special Collections & Archives' 322nd Field Artillery Records (MS-100) but contains no one-of-a-kind attributes. OCLC Worldcat lists 35 copies of this book, including Wright State's copy. In this case, the archival citation information provides added value, but is not absolutely crucial:

History of the 322nd Field Artillery (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1920), in Box 3, MS-100, 322nd Field Artillery Records, Special Collections & Archives, University Libraries, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio.

Example #2

Orville Wright's personal copy of Otto Lilienthal's book Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation, found in Special Collections & Archives' Wright Brothers Collection (MS-1), contains Orville's own handwritten notations. If your research specifically references something unique to a particular copy of a book---such as handwritten notations by its owner---then it is crucial to cite not only the book itself but also the archival collection that contains it because the source material can only be found in that repository:

Otto Lilienthal, Birdflight as the Basis of Aviation: A Contribution Toward a System of Aviation, trans. A. W. Isenthal (London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1911), in MS-1, Wright Brothers Collection, Special Collections & Archives, University Libraries, Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio.
